Government of India initiated several schemes and programmes to empower and equip people of India with digital technologies. In an exclusive interview to sixtyplus.co, the Union Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Shri Ajay P Sawhney, IAS, enumerated the initiatives taken by Govt of India during last 4 years. Shri Sawhney is an IAS officer of 1984 batch. He was Principal Secretary IT in undivided Andhra Pradesh Government. He was instrumental in developing, designing and establishing the prestigious IIIT in Hyderabad. He was also President and CEO of National E Governance mission.
Shri Sawhney gave details of flagship programme of Government of India for use of digital technology i.e Digital India. Electronic manufacturing sector has been given a big boost. Capacity building, digital empowerment of rural people and digital payment system ( BHIM scheme) were given emphasis. For senior citizens, Shri Sawhney mentioned about Jeevan Praman initiative under which retirees need not go a bank every November to make their presence. One can digitally certify his/her existence electronically.
